Use the checklist as a review, not a performance

A checklist is useful when each item points to evidence. 'Review cash' means opening the bank and accounting records, reconciling recent activity, and noting upcoming obligations. Checking a box without looking at the record creates false confidence.

Choose an owner and a fixed day for each review. A solo founder may own every line at first, but the responsibility should still be explicit.

Weekly operating review

Review the business while there is still time to change the week.

  • Cash: reconcile inflows and outflows, then look ahead at the next four weeks.
  • Pipeline: record qualified opportunities, next actions, and stalled conversations.
  • Delivery: inspect deadlines, rework, support requests, and refund signals.
  • Customer path: test the buying and onboarding journey on desktop and mobile.
  • Risk: note one dependency, compliance deadline, or access problem that needs an owner.

Monthly operating review

The monthly review connects individual weeks to a larger decision. Compare actual results with the prior forecast. Investigate the largest variance instead of explaining every small one.

Save a dated copy of the completed review. The record becomes more useful after several months because patterns in cash, demand, fulfillment, and recurring failures become visible.

  • Close and organize financial records.
  • Review customer acquisition, conversion, retention, refunds, and fulfillment cost.
  • Remove or document one repeated manual task.
  • Confirm backups, account access, renewals, and required filings.
